The City of Flagstaff has acknowledged that on July 30, 2024, trucks transported uranium ore from Pinyon Plain Mine near the Grand Canyon through the Flagstaff area. The Flagstaff City Council continues to advocate against uranium mining and its transport in and through the region. This advocacy includes passing multiple resolutions and supporting federal legislation aimed at restricting uranium mining and transport.

Although the Flagstaff City Council opposes the transport of uranium ore through the community, it does not have jurisdiction over federal or state highways.

The Flagstaff Fire Department (FFD) is knowledgeable about the hazards associated with shipping uranium ore and has plans to address accidental circumstances. In case of an accident, FFD would evaluate, treat, and assist with containment issues. Cleanup processes would be managed by an outside contractor provided by the shipper. While FFD would not perform cleanup, it can use detection equipment to ensure there are no measurable radioactive hazards in the area.
