The City of Flagstaff is reaching out to the Southside community, encouraging both current and former residents, as well as those with strong connections to the area, to share their memories for a new public art project. The sculpture, named "Rustle," will be installed at Cleo Murdoch Park, located next to the Murdoch Community Center at 203 E. Brannen Avenue.

Artist Beth Nybeck has designed the 8-foot-high sculpture using weathering steel. The piece will feature words and phrases contributed by the community in its leaf-like structure. This artwork aims to represent nature and the interconnected stories that characterize the Southside neighborhood, celebrating its history and people.

Beth Nybeck is known nationally for her work as a metal sculptor and public artist. Her design was chosen through a process involving community engagement. Themes identified by both the selection panel and local residents include Southside's historical significance, neighborhood unity, mutual support among residents, equity and justice, multicultural experiences, and embedded memories.

“'Rustle' is a meaningful and impactful addition to Cleo Murdoch Park that residents, visitors and future generations will be able experience for many years,” said Weldon.

Residents are invited to submit their memories via Connect Flagstaff at connect.flagstaffaz.gov/southsidememories
