The City of Flagstaff has announced a partnership with the NAU VisualDESIGN Lab to redesign the city's logo. The design work will be conducted by the NAU VisualDESIGN Lab under the leadership of Professor Patricia Murphey, while a small working group convened by the City will provide guidance and oversight.
The NAU VisualDESIGN Lab is a collaborative learning space where students in the NAU Visual Communication program work with community members on innovative design solutions. The lab has previously created logos for many prominent organizations in Flagstaff, including Coconino County, Flagstaff Festival of Science, and Flagstaff Shelter Services.
The working group will be diverse and represent different perspectives of the community. It aims to advocate for an appropriate depiction of Flagstaff’s history and culture, and guide the design team towards creating a product that is aesthetically pleasing.
Vice Mayor Austin Aslan expressed his support for this initiative, stating “this conversation is definitely overdue. A hard look at our city branding has long fallen to the wayside or been relegated to the back burner. It’s a part of the story we tell. It’s a part of how we represent ourselves and I think it’s a fabulous roadmap we have forward with this project.”
The project is expected to take approximately one year to complete. The final design will be recommended by the working group for approval from City Council. Due to time volunteered by members of both the NAU VisualDESIGN Lab and the City’s working group, this project will be completed at no cost to the City.
