The City of Flagstaff, in collaboration with Banicki Construction, is set to commence construction on the Schultz Creek Drainage Improvements at US Hwy 180 in April. The project aims to enhance the drainage system by installing a new concrete box culvert under US Hwy 180, with a target completion date of July 1. The final touches, including highway repaving and landscaping restoration, are expected to be finalized by Aug. 1.

To address the potential flooding risks before the 2024 monsoon season, traffic control measures will be enforced on US Hwy 180 from W Stevanna Way to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church starting April 1 until Aug. 1. During this period, both lanes will remain open, but speeds will be reduced to 25 mph within the construction zone. Construction activities will take place from Monday to Saturday between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m., with possible adjustments to the schedule as needed. Despite the construction, the Flagstaff Urban Trail System (FUTS) trail segment adjacent to US Hwy 180 will stay accessible throughout the project, with a detour in place for a specific phase.

The significance of this project lies in its capacity to mitigate the aftermath of the Pipeline Fire in June 2022, which led to severe flooding in Flagstaff during the 2022 monsoon season. The inadequacy of the existing culvert at US Hwy 180 resulted in considerable damage in areas like Stevanna Way and Coconino Estates. Although a temporary emergency culvert was installed in 2023, it was not sufficient to handle potential post-fire monsoon flows. The introduction of the new box culvert is expected to address both the post-fire flood threats and reduce the FEMA special flood hazard area for the nearby neighborhood.

For any inquiries related to the project, individuals are encouraged to reach out to City of Flagstaff Water Services Engineering Section Director Mac McNamara at MMcNamara@flagstaffaz.gov.
