Arizona State Senator Janae Shamp has expressed her support for Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) in Arizona, highlighting their importance in safeguarding children. Shamp emphasized the significance of parental authority through ESAs in protecting children from harmful situations.

Speaking about the issue, Shamp stated, "Just another reason that Parental Authority thru ESA's is vital to saving our children from this evil lunacy!"

Shamp's endorsement of ESAs comes in response to a viral TikTok video featuring an Arizona educator who criticized parents and board members advocating for safe spaces for biologically female students, particularly in restrooms. The educator accused these advocates of not genuinely caring about children and suggested they incite violence. Shamp shared the TikTok video on a social media platform, further underlining the need for Arizona students to have access to ESAs to protect them from teachers and situations depicted in the video.

Arizona's ESA program was established in 2011, initially catering to only 23% of students who met the qualifying criteria. These criteria included students with disabilities, those attending failing public schools, and wards of the court, among others. However, a comprehensive school choice bill passed last year expanded access to ESAs for all students, ensuring more children can benefit from the program.

According to a survey commissioned by the "yes. every kid. foundation.," 63% of Arizona voters support school choice. This support extends across party lines, with 78% of Republicans, 61% of Independents, and even 48% of Democrats expressing their favor for school choice. The poll also revealed that 78% of parents are supportive of the ESA program. In contrast, Governor Katie Hobbs has limited support within the state, with only 34% of voters approving of her, according to the same survey.

Analyzing data from approximately 68,000 ESA students, it was found that a majority, around 57%, reside in districts with higher incomes. Additionally, many of these students live near tribal lands. The Colorado City Unified School District had the highest enrollment rate, with 152 students per 1,000. Other districts with significant ESA enrollment include the Young Elementary District, Fort Thomas Unified, Ash Creek Elementary District, Concho Elementary District, and San Carlos Unified District. The Scottsdale Unified School District experienced the most significant growth in ESAs, with a staggering 1,000% increase.

Arizona State Senator Janae Shamp's advocacy for ESAs emphasizes the importance of parental authority in protecting children. With support from the majority of Arizona voters and parents, the ESA program provides an alternative for families seeking educational choices and opportunities for their children.
