Members of the Flagstaff City Council may have to consider cuts or tax increases as they face over $154 million in requests by voters and an election in November.
Many of these requests are for the Flagstaff’s forest restoration projects. Additionally, there are requests for the council to address the city’s $111 million pension liability that should be set aside for the city's public safety employees.
However, unless the city increases property taxes, they won't have the cash to fund these projects. Their funds only total to $61 million.
The current tax rate is .8366 per $100 of the total value on a property. For these taxes to be increased, the council would have to approve $61 million in bonds. If they have to push for more, the homeowners would have to pay more in property taxes each year.
The three bond proposals include a bond to address affordable housing projects, a bond to build an additional park and include more field space. The third bond proposal includes open spaces.
