The City of Flagstaff has announced the completion of the Aspen Niche project, a collaborative effort with Qwest Corporation that began in 2021. Situated on Aspen Avenue between Century Link and Pay 'N Take, the project features new bicycle parking and beautification elements. These include updated fencing, vehicle and pedestrian gates, and asphalt replacement aimed at enhancing the pedestrian experience.
"Aspen Niche is a bright and inviting aesthetic for the downtown experience," stated Jana Weldon, Program Manager for the City's Beautification, Arts & Sciences program. "With the bike hub, this project adds value that is both artistic and functional, creating a more welcoming atmosphere by encouraging visitors to engage with their surroundings."
Weldon further noted that "the incorporation of weathering steel and color accents connects this beautification and public art project to the 'Among Trees' installation at Flagstaff Municipal Court and 'Touch home, reach sky' at the entry to the Flagstaff-City Coconino County Public Library."
The development received input from several entities including CenturyLink, Pay 'N Take, Orpheum Theater, as well as various City of Flagstaff commissions and committees. Among these were the Historic Preservation Commission, Bicycle Advisory Committee, Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and Expanded Right of Way Committee which includes participation from the Flagstaff Downtown Business Association along with key City staff from Streets and Parks Recreation Open Space Events (PROSE). The design was executed by BAS staff in collaboration with Farrah Dang of Morning Dew.
