Glendale City Councilmember Jamie Aldama participated in a panel discussion at the One Community Point of Pride event at Midwestern University on June 15. The Socially Responsible Business Advocacy panel, held during the month dedicated to celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer pride, focused on how organizations approach social responsibility and the intersection of good business practice and social change.

“As a city, we continue to improve our policies that advance diversity in our community,” said Councilmember Aldama. “Glendale needs to remain a leading agency through our actions as an inclusive city. We are a diverse city and I will continue to speak up and speak out on behalf of all citizens.”

The city is committed to equal protection and treatment for all people. The City Council began studying the topic of enhancing equity and inclusiveness starting in 2014. In May 2021, the City Council approved a non-discrimination ordinance prohibiting discrimination in employment, housing and places of public accommodation based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, veteran’s status, marital status, genetic information or familial status.

The ordinance ensures that the diverse population in Glendale has equal access to and equal treatment regarding what they buy, services they need, the jobs they hold and where they live.

Additionally, the city has designated an LGBT liaison to the City Manager as a resource for the public to elevate the voice of the LGBT community and to ensure the concerns of the community are being heard by executive city staff.
