City partnership announces first round of “Sustainability Leaders” among Flagstaff rental properties

Announcement

City of Flagstaff issued the following announcement on Feb. 11.

The City of Flagstaff Sustainability Office and its partner RentLab have announced the City’s inaugural list of “Early Sustainability Leaders” among Flagstaff’s rental properties. The City’s partnership with RentLab, a social benefit corporation based in Tucson, began in 2019 when Flagstaff joined the effort as a pilot community, and was developed to support sustainability, affordability, and carbon-neutrality goals in Flagstaff’s rental housing sector.

Properties were identified using metrics focused on environmental, social, and economic sustainability factors. RentLab’s website is in the early stages of development, but will eventually include a broad range of information, including energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, walkability, and affordability.

“Sustainability and affordability can be a black-box for prospective renters,” says City Climate & Energy Coordinator Ramón Alatorre. “Renters would like to know things like ‘will I be able to recycle?’, ‘can I easily access public transit?’ and ‘is the home insulated and efficient when winter comes?’. Affordability is about more than price of rent, and the RentLab platform aims to help renters make more informed decisions.”

“Gen Z and Millennials are the drivers of sustainability initiatives, and they're also the largest renter demographic,” says General Manager Caitlin Hailey of top-scorer The Grove. “It's more important than ever for apartment communities to recognize their impact, and how we can join them in the fight for change.”

In addition to the high scorers above, several additional properties are recognized as “early leaders” on RentLab’s Flagstaff map (www.rentlab.org/flagstaff-az). Scoring is based on a combination of data from public sources, partner landlords and property managers, and tenants.

“There are plenty of rental property owners in Flagstaff who are making significant contributions to the community’s sustainability and affordability goals, and RentLab is about celebrating that,” said Alatorre. “At the same time, we want to work with others to prioritize and implement improvements in a way that benefits tenants, landlords, and the community overall.”

“Sustainability leader” recognition will be awarded to the highest-scoring Flagstaff properties on a yearly basis. Individuals wishing to learn more or share property information can email info@rentlab.org.
