The City of Flagstaff is inviting artists, graphic designers, and illustrators to submit original artwork for two utility cabinets located along Route 66. The Beautification, Arts & Sciences (BAS) program has set a deadline for submissions on February 25 at noon.
Two selected artists will create designs for cabinets situated near Postal Boulevard and Fourth Street on Route 66. Eligible participants must be at least 18 years old and reside in the United States. Submissions should consist of original artwork in any medium, provided they can be transformed into high-resolution digital images without compromising quality. The chosen designs will be printed on vinyl and applied to the cabinets.
This initiative continues BAS's mission to enhance public art offerings in Flagstaff and support local artists. Since 2020, nine traffic signal cabinets have been transformed into colorful displays through this program. In partnership with Arizona Public Service, ten more utility cabinets are being added.
"The public response to art wraps around town has been tremendously positive," said Weldon. "The opportunity to provide artistic interventions in our built landscape is deeply rewarding for our local communities, businesses and visitors."
Community panels will review proposals based on artistic merit and relevance to the site. Recommendations will then go before the Beautification and Public Art Commission for approval. Finalists will receive a $2,000 stipend.
Funding for this project comes from the City of Flagstaff’s Bed, Board, and Beverage (BBB) tax with support from the Beautification and Public Art Commission. Interested individuals can find more information or apply by visiting flagstaff.az.gov/4411.
