You may not think of Grand Canyon when you think of Volcanos. Vulcan’s Throne is a cinder cone which formed 73,000 years ago on the rim of Grand Canyon, located near Toroweap in the western side of the park, and is part of the Unikaret Volcanic Field. This volcanic filed helped to create lava dams and backed up the Colorado River for over 150 miles. When the lava dams were in place, a lake larger than Lake Mead National Recreation Area - National Park Service existed in the walls of the canyon and began north of the confluence. The famous Lava Falls Rapids, which can be heard on the rim when the river is running high, is a remnant of these basaltic flows spilling over the walls of the canyon into the Colorado River.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Northeast Region, that’s precious you think your underwater volcanoes, your puffins and beaked animals are better than ours. However, we have the proud and noble humpback chub. It might be tough to look at…but that makes it even cuter. Plus, your volcanoes do not exist on the rim of one the world’s natural wonders! Lava bomb dropped, boom!

Hey Katmai National Park & Preserve, do you have volcanoes up there or is Bear 747 just plopping down and creating those big craters
