FUSD Honors National Hispanic Heritage Month
The Flagstaff Unified School District honors National Hispanic Heritage Month with the passage of a resolution recognizing the essential contributions made by Hispanic Americans in all aspects of the formation of our country. At the October 6, 2020 Governing Board meeting, the following resolution was passed:
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND HONORING NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
WHEREAS, the Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board is honored to join citizens throughout the country in recognizing September 15-October 15, 2020 as National Hispanic Heritage Month; and
WHEREAS, every year, since 1968, from September 15 to October 15 our country has celebrated Hispanic culture and contributions to our community and nation; and
WHEREAS, the 2020 theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month: Hispanics: Be Proud of Your Past and Embrace Your Future, brings focus to the essential contributions made by the Hispanic Americans − those who have ancestors who come from Mexico, the Caribbean, Spain, Central America, and South America− in all aspects of the formation of our country; and
WHEREAS, this is an opportunity to share the historical contributions of Hispanic Americans that have significantly impacted education. Pioneers such as Roberto Alvarez whose groundbreaking case Roberto Álvarez v Lemon Grove School District (CA, 1931) was the first successful school desegregation case in American history; and
WHEREAS, throughout the year, we honor the contributions of Hispanic Americans in our history as well as celebrating the contributions of Hispanic Americans who serve our communities and schools every day; and
WHEREAS, in Flagstaff Unified School District, Hispanic/Latinx students makeup 27.5‐percent of the student population and represent one of the largest racial/ethnic group among Arizona’s child population, and
WHEREAS, the Flagstaff Unified School District offers nationally recognized educational programs through Puente de Hozho so students may learn and experience the unique language and culture of Hispanic Americans, and;
WHEREAS, in resonance with the 2020 theme of Hispanics: Be Proud of Your Past and Embrace your Future, the Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board recognizes the significant contributions and considerable advances that Hispanic Americans have made, and continue to make each and every day in our community, state, and the world, as leaders, politicians, educators, and public servants.
