Brian Wright has been appointed as the head coach of the Northern Arizona University (NAU) football program, becoming the 31st person to hold this position. The announcement was made by Mike Marlow, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, on Sunday.
"Brian Wright was a targeted candidate who quickly became our top choice as NAU's head football coach," stated Marlow. He praised Wright's successful track record in various coaching roles and emphasized his ability to build strong relationships with players and supporters.
Wright comes from Pittsburg State University, where he served as head coach since December 2019. During his tenure, he led the team to two consecutive Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships and earned an overall record of 33-8. In 2022, he was named MIAA Conference Coach of the Year.
"My family and I are extremely excited to join the Northern Arizona football family and Lumberjack community," said Wright. He expressed gratitude towards NAU Athletic Director Mike Marlow and President José Luis Cruz Rivera for their support.
Dr. José Luis Cruz Rivera, President of Northern Arizona University, also expressed confidence in Wright's abilities. "Out of a highly credentialed deep pool of head coach candidates, I was very impressed with Brian Wright," he noted.
Before joining Pittsburg State, Wright held positions at Toledo, Montana State, Youngstown State, Florida Atlantic, and Walsh University. His experience includes leading teams to conference titles and playoff appearances while developing several players who advanced to professional leagues.
NAU is seeking approval from the Arizona Board of Regents for Coach Wright's contract at the earliest opportunity. A formal introduction will take place on Thursday at Parsons Auditorium in Flagstaff.
