After eight years at the helm of Northern Arizona University's cross country and track and field programs, Michael Smith will step down as Director at the end of the 2024-25 seasons. This decision was announced by NAU's Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, Mike Marlow. Smith plans to pursue professional coaching opportunities.

Jarred Cornfield, currently serving as associate head coach for distance and mid-distance events, will take over Smith's role in July 2025. Cornfield has been part of the program since 2015, initially joining as a graduate assistant under former head coach Eric Heins. He has worked alongside Smith since 2016.

Marlow expressed gratitude for Smith's contributions: "Built by all those who came before him, Mike Smith has fortified and expanded an extremely solid foundation of NAU Cross Country/Track and Field." Marlow also praised Cornfield's readiness to lead: "To have Jarred Cornfield ready, willing and more than able to assume the reins this coming July speaks volumes."

Smith joined NAU in August 2016 and played a key role in elevating the Lumberjacks' national profile. Under his guidance, NAU won its first NCAA National Championship in men's cross country in 2016. The team went on to secure national titles in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Reflecting on his tenure at NAU, Smith said: "For the past eight years I have lived out a professional dream coaching at Northern Arizona University." He expressed pride in his athletes' development both on and off the field.

NAU President José Luis Cruz Rivera commented on the transition: "As we enter Coach Mike Smith's last season...we are also thrilled to have our very own Associate Head Coach Jarred Cornfield continue this work."

Cornfield shared his excitement about taking over leadership: "I am absolutely thrilled and humbled to be entrusted with the future leadership of this wonderful program."

Smith will remain with NAU through the upcoming season before stepping down. The Lumberjacks will begin their cross country season with the George Kyte Classic on August 31st.
