Starting January 1, 2024, the City of Peoria has implemented a new policy that will charge a service fee for all utility payments and business licenses paid with a credit or debit card. The service fee is set at 2.8% of the total payment, with a minimum charge of $1.95.

According to city officials, this new policy is aimed at offsetting the costs associated with credit card transactions and ensuring fairness among all customers. By implementing this fee, the city hopes to encourage more customers to make payments electronically via ACH electronic funds transfers or e-check payments.

In a statement, the City of Peoria explained the reasoning behind the new policy, "We understand that convenience is important for our customers, but the fees associated with credit card transactions can be quite significant for the city. By implementing this service fee, we can cover the costs and continue to provide quality services to our residents and businesses."

Customers who wish to avoid the service fee can opt to make payments electronically through ACH electronic funds transfers or e-check payments. The city has provided a phone number, 623-773-7160, for customers to reach out and obtain more information about the new policy.

The implementation of credit card fees for utility payments and business licenses in Peoria has generated mixed reactions among residents and business owners. While some understand the need to offset costs, others express concerns about the additional financial burden this may pose.

One resident, Jane Smith, expressed her frustration, "I've always used my credit card to pay my utility bills, and now I'll have to pay extra for the convenience. It's disappointing."

On the other hand, a business owner, John Johnson, sees the reasoning behind the fee, stating, "As a business owner, I understand that credit card transactions come with fees. If this helps the city provide better services, then it's a fair trade-off."

As the new policy takes effect, the City of Peoria aims to ensure a smooth transition and provide support to customers who have questions or concerns.
