Arizona Rep. Austin Smith has lambasted Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes and her intention to introduce Education Protection Orders aiming at implementing gun control measures, following a recent mass shooting in Maine. "Not a chance, Mayes. DOA," Smith said.
"At a minimum we must be able to keep guns out of the hands of individuals who threaten our schools and universities," Mayes posted on the X platform. "Next session, I plan to propose legislation for Education Protection Orders that would do just that."
"Red flag" laws allow judges to issue gun confiscation orders if an individual's behavior suggests they may pose a risk if they have access to weapons. According to AZ Free News, Mayes is, allegedly, considering using these laws, not only to confiscate weapons from potentially threatening people, but also from those living with such individuals. Further gun control measures are also planned for the upcoming legislative session, which might include background checks and comprehensive bans on "assault" weapons, among others.
Mayes declared her intent after the United States witnessed its 36th mass murder of the year when Robert Card, a 40-year-old U.S. Army Reservist and firearms instructor killed 18 people and injured more than a dozen others at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston, Maine. Card subsequently disappeared and was found dead from self-inflicted gunshot wound on Friday in Lisbon Falls. The firearms used in the shooting had been legally acquired according Associated Press.
However, following Mayes' announcement, Republican lawmakers voiced their disappointment contending that red flag laws might be unconstitutional. "And if she tries, it will be an opportunity for the Legislature to push for Impeachment on Kris Mayes!" stated Arizona State Sen. Anthony Kern said, according to the X platform.
Last week, there was dissatisfaction from Arizona Republican lawmakers towards a statement by Arizona House Democrats advocating for gun safety reforms as response to the recent shooting incident leading disagreement among Republicans according House Democrats press release.
