Building safety plan review timelines extended due to staffing vacancies

Due to a high number of staff vacancies and a high volume of permit activity, the City of Flagstaff is extending its current published building safety plan review times. The timeline for a building safety completeness review is being extending by five working days and the timeline for a building safety substantive review is being extending by 10 working days. It is always the goal of the City to process permits efficiently, while ensuring compliance with the adopted Building Codes. Once full staffing is achieved, the City will restore the previously published time frames for building safety plan reviews. The updated time frames are posted on the City’s website:

  • Residential Submittal Timeline https://www.flagstaff.az.gov/DocumentCenter/View/44019
  • Commercial Submittal Timeline https://www.flagstaff.az.gov/DocumentCenter/View/42127”

The City of Flagstaff Building Safety section is managing through a number of vacancies that impact its ability to meet previous timelines for Building Safety services, including vacancies in the positions of Plans Examiner, Building Permit Technician and Building Inspector. The City has been actively and continuously recruiting for these positions, but has struggled to find qualified candidates for this technical work. In addition to full-time staff, the City also contracts with external firms for plan review and inspection services and is utilizing these services to minimize delays as much as possible.

At this time, the City has been able to continue next-day inspections as scheduled and will continue to send out building plan sets to its contracted reviewer while vacant positions are filled.

The City is recruiting for all open Building Safety positions including Building Inspector, Building Plans Examiner and Building Permit Technician and qualified applicants are encouraged to apply at governmentjobs.com/careers/flagstaff.
