Dr. John Stewart of Arizona Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers says patients can face harsh consequences if they choose to ignore sinus inflammation.
“Chronic sinusitis can have many significant consequences to one’s health," Stewart told Coconino News. "If left untreated, it can affect not only one’s nasal passageways and respiratory system, but your cardiovascular health as well."
During the cold winter months, you may experience an increase in sinus-related issues. Sinus infections can result from the cold winter months drying out the sinuses, creating an ideal breeding ground for infection. Symptoms include a runny nose, postnasal drip and a sinus headache.
The best ways to avoid sinus infections are: regular cleaning around the house, good hygiene, regular handwashing, wearing protective clothing outdoors in the cold weather, using a humidifier, drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy diet. Avoiding certain known allergens like pets and mold can also help ward of a sinus infection.
Experts say if your sinus inflammation is accompanied by a sinus headache and facial pressure and has lingered past a few days or weeks, it is time to seek an otolaryngologist -- or ear, nose and throat specialist, according to Hindustan Times.
