Flagstaff Unified School District issued the following announcement on Aug. 10.

The Flagstaff Unified School District’s governing board voted to require the use of face masks when indoors on school property as part of its district’s mitigation plan during its regular governing board meeting Aug. 10.

The mask requirement will go into effect on the first day of school, Aug. 11, and it applies to all persons while indoors and on school property including on school buses. Students, staff and visitors needing a mask will be supplied with one.

The action of the governing board referenced “the COVID-19 pandemic has not abated in our community and instead, cases continue to rise.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Arizona Department of Health Services, the Arizona Department of Education and the Coconino County Department of Health are all advising all persons to wear masks indoors because of new evidence relative to the spread of the Delta variant.

The board resolution also mentioned “the Arizona Department of Health Services lists the universal and correct use of masks as one of the five mitigation strategies that schools should use to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

The FUSD governing board has the authority to establish policies and procedures for the school district that help to ensure student and staff safety.

In regards to HB 2898, the school board resolution also mentioned “the Arizona Constitution provides that any legislation passed by the legislature does not become effective and is not the law until 90 days after close of the legislative session, which is September 29, 2021.”
