The City of Tucson and Sun Tran have been given a $221,000 grant by the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Human Trafficking Awareness and Public Safety Initiative.

Officials say this particular grant will help enable Sun Tran to fully implement necessary solutions that could lead to the reduction of human trafficking. In addition, the grant will be used to shield transit operators from the risk of assault and decrease criminal activities on public transit vehicles.

“Sun Tran is pleased to have these resources to bring awareness to this important national issue,” said Sun Tran General Manager Steve Spade. “The federal government successfully worked with the trucking industry to increase awareness and reporting of human trafficking incidents. Now they are looking to create a similar effort with select transit systems. With the support from our partners and the community, this is an opportunity for Sun Tran to enhance public safety in Tucson.”
