The Greater Flagstaff Region will hold a public meeting on April 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Flagstaff Aquaplex to discuss the ongoing update of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). Residents are invited to meet with local fire department staff, consult subject matter experts, and share feedback that will help shape the CWPP’s development. The event also aims to inform attendees about wildfire risk reduction strategies for both forests and homes.

The CWPP update is important because it addresses community safety in the face of wildfire threats. Recommendations in the plan will focus on reducing hazardous fuels, increasing public outreach and education, lowering structural ignitability, and improving wildfire response capabilities. Organizers say these efforts are designed to enhance safety for residents and protect critical infrastructure throughout the project area.

The City of Flagstaff recently received a Community Wildfire Defense Grant to support this CWPP update for communities across Coconino and Yavapai counties. Residents are encouraged to participate further by completing a public survey available through the CWPP website, which seeks input that could improve wildfire safety across the region.

According to the official website, City of Flagstaff received designation as the world’s first International Dark Sky City in 2001 according to the official website. The city delivers community services through its departments while promoting public involvement via boards, commissions, and elections according to the official website. Policy guidance comes from an elected mayor and council members according to the official website.

Flagstaff has a history of adopting measures aimed at protecting its environment; zoning codes limiting outdoor lighting per acre were adopted in 1989 according to the official website, following an ordinance enacted in 1958 that addressed outdoor lighting issues according to the official website.
