NAU Athletics honors student-athletes at 12th annual Louie’s Awards ceremony

Northern Arizona University celebrated its top student-athletes and teams at the 12th annual Louie’s Awards on April 27 at Prochnow Auditorium. The event, presented by Desert Financial Credit Union and the NAU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, recognized athletic and academic achievements from the spring 2025, fall 2025, and winter 2026 seasons.

The Louie’s Awards highlighted notable performances across a range of sports. Men’s distance runner Colin Sahlman received both Male Athlete of the Year and Individual Record-Breaking Performance after winning the Big Sky cross country title, earning All-American honors with a national finish of 16th place, securing an indoor national title in the 3,000 meters, anchoring a championship relay team, and setting a collegiate record in the 800 meters. Diver Grace Wesche was named Female Athlete of the Year for her participation at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships where she achieved NAU’s highest-ever individual finish by placing 21st on the three-meter springboard.

The volleyball program collected five awards including Female Team of the Year and Team Record-Breaking Performance following their Big Sky regular season championship. Keira Hall (Silent Leader), Lilly Holmes (Female Ironjack), and Ken Murphy (Coach of the Year) were also recognized individually.

Academic accomplishments were acknowledged as well. Distance runner Cael Grotenhuis and swimmer Elsa Musselman were honored as William M. “Bill” Clements Top Scholars for their classroom performance. The soccer team won the Sharp Axe Award for highest team GPA while golfer Lizzie Neale received recognition for her dedication to academics, athletics, community service, and leadership through the Desert Financial Credit Union Jack of All Traits award.

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks includes distinguished alumni inducted into the Big Sky Conference Hall of Fame according to its official website. The university has excelled in cross country and track & field with several conference championships and national titles among alumni according to its official website.
