Jonathan Nez, a candidate for Arizona’s Second Congressional District and former President of the Navajo Nation, has criticized Representative Eli Crane for increasing health care costs in rural Arizona. Nez issued a statement regarding the reopening of the federal government and its impact on health care expenses.

“The government may have reopened, but the damage from this manufactured shutdown is already being felt across rural Arizona,” Nez said. He emphasized that families are struggling to afford essentials like groceries, gas, or medical visits due to what he describes as congressional extremism. According to Nez, Congressman Crane missed opportunities to support rural families by not preventing a rise in health care costs. Instead, Crane aligned with Washington politicians who obstructed efforts to maintain affordable insurance premiums.

Nez highlighted that Crane’s actions follow his vote for significant Medicaid cuts, which could result in the closure of at least three hospitals and remove over 26,000 Arizonans from their health care coverage. “That’s not representation; that’s betrayal,” Nez said. He advocates for leadership prioritizing affordable health care access and keeping the government operational.

Nez is running for Congress under Jonathan Nez for Congress with aims to reduce family expenses, ensure water security statewide, and represent rural voices in Congress. His background includes growing up in rural Arizona without basic utilities and serving as President of the Navajo Nation after beginning his public service career in Shonto on the Navajo Nation.
