Jonathan Nez, a candidate for Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District and former President of the Navajo Nation, has criticized Congressman Eli Crane for his vote that could lead to increased healthcare costs in the district. Nez claims that Crane’s decision to let enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits expire will result in a more than 400% increase in healthcare costs for some constituents.

Nez said, “Congressman Crane is completely out of touch with what rural Arizonans are facing.” He emphasized that rural Arizonans expect their representatives to prioritize their interests, even if it means opposing party lines. Nez highlighted that other Republicans have shown such courage, but accused Crane of prioritizing insurance companies and donors over his constituents.

Crane reportedly expressed reluctance during a recent government shutdown to support extending ACA subsidies. This decision could potentially result in significant cost increases for some constituents. Last year, Crane also voted for substantial cuts to Medicaid (AHCCCS), which Nez argues could lead to the closure of at least five hospitals in Arizona and impact nearly 400,000 residents’ healthcare access.

Jonathan Nez, who grew up in rural Arizona and served as President of the Navajo Nation from 2018, is running for Congress under the Democratic ticket. His campaign focuses on reducing family costs, ensuring water security across Arizona, and representing rural voices in Congress. Nez resides in Flagstaff with his family.
