The City of Flagstaff announced on Apr. 6 that construction will soon begin on the new Montalvo Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Community Center at 211 E. First Avenue. The project is set to start the week of April 20, with completion expected by late 2026.

The new facility aims to enhance educational opportunities and provide a space for community gatherings in Flagstaff. City officials said the center will become a hub for learning, innovation, and connection among residents.

A notable feature of the project includes installing a new mosaic inspired by the original design from the former structure at the site. This addition is intended to preserve an important visual element from the location’s history.

During construction, residents may experience temporary impacts such as noise, dust, and minor traffic disruptions in nearby areas. The city said it will work with its contractor to minimize these effects and maintain safety for everyone involved.

Flagstaff has a long history of civic engagement and public services. The city delivers community services through various departments while encouraging public involvement via boards, commissions, and elections according to its official website. Flagstaff operates under an elected mayor and council members who set policy according to its official website.

Flagstaff also holds recognition as the world’s first International Dark Sky City since 2001 according to its official website. To support this designation, zoning codes adopted in 1989 limit outdoor lighting per acre according to its official website, building on earlier efforts such as an ordinance enacted in 1958 addressing outdoor lighting issues according to its official website.
