The City of Flagstaff has introduced the Wildfire Resilient Homes Initiative (WRHI), a joint effort between the Flagstaff Fire Department and the Flagstaff Sustainability Office. The program is designed to help residents reduce wildfire risks to their homes and neighborhoods.
The WRHI offers three main services. First, homeowners, renters, and property managers can receive free on-site home assessments from trained professionals who will identify vulnerabilities and provide science-based recommendations for lowering wildfire risk. Second, participants are eligible for Wildfire Resilience Kits that include tools such as gloves, loppers, a gutter cleaning hose attachment, trash bags for pine needles, a collapsible rake, vent screening, and a Wildfire Action Guide to support immediate action. Third, grants of up to $600 are available to qualifying residents for removing flammable materials within the critical 0–5 foot Home Ignition Zone. Priority for grants is given to those with financial or physical barriers.
Flagstaff’s location in a fire-adapted ponderosa pine forest makes wildfires an ongoing concern. According to city officials, while large-scale forest restoration continues in the area, this initiative aims to empower residents to take practical steps at home that strengthen community resilience.
“Together, we can make Flagstaff wildfire resilient – one home at a time,” said representatives from the city.
Residents interested in scheduling a free home assessment can do so online or by calling (928) 326-4419.
