The City of Flagstaff has introduced the Wildfire Resilient Homes Initiative (WRHI), a program developed in partnership with the Flagstaff Fire Department and the Flagstaff Sustainability Office. The initiative is designed to help residents reduce the risk of wildfire damage to their homes and neighborhoods.

The WRHI offers three main forms of support for homeowners, renters, and property managers. First, free home assessments are available, where trained professionals visit properties to identify potential vulnerabilities and provide recommendations based on scientific research aimed at reducing structure loss during wildfires. Second, participants can receive Wildfire Resilience Kits that include gloves, loppers, a gutter cleaning hose attachment, trash bags for pine needles, a collapsible rake, vent screening materials, and a Wildfire Action Guide. These tools are intended to help residents take immediate steps toward protecting their homes.

Additionally, eligible residents may apply for grants of up to $600 to assist with removing flammable materials from the critical 0–5 foot Home Ignition Zone around their homes. Priority for these grants will be given to those who face financial or physical challenges in completing mitigation work.

Flagstaff’s position within a fire-adapted ponderosa pine forest means that wildfire remains an ongoing concern for the community. According to city officials, while large-scale forest restoration projects continue in the area, WRHI aims to empower individuals at the household level.

“Together, we can make Flagstaff wildfire resilient – one home at a time,” city representatives stated.

Residents interested in participating can schedule a free home assessment through an online booking page or by calling (928) 326-4419.
