The City of Flagstaff announced on Mar. 18 that it is proposing to amend the City Code to introduce new rates or fees related to licensing fees for short term rentals. The proposal will be considered by the City Council at a public meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 211 W. Aspen Avenue, Flagstaff, Arizona.

This proposed change is significant as it could affect property owners and operators of short term rentals within the city. The council may approve, disapprove, or modify the proposed rates or fees during this process.

A first reading of an ordinance to approve these changes may take place at the May 5 meeting, with a possible second reading set for Tuesday, May 19, also at 3:00 p.m. in the same location. A written report supporting the new rates or fees has been made available for public review.

Jessica Kittleson, Customer Service Director, said residents with questions can contact her directly at (928) 213-2267. The notice was posted on the homepage of the City website and will also be distributed through social media channels.

City of Flagstaff operates with an elected mayor and council members who establish policy and offer guidance according to the official website. The city delivers community services through its departments and divisions while encouraging public involvement via boards, commissions and elections according to the official website.

Flagstaff has a history of managing local issues through ordinances and zoning codes; it enacted an ordinance in 1958 to address outdoor lighting concerns according to the official website, and adopted zoning codes in 1989 that limit outdoor lighting per acre according to the official website. In addition, Flagstaff received designation as the world’s first International Dark Sky City in 2001 according to the official website.

The next steps include public meetings where residents can provide input before any final decision is made regarding short term rental license fees.
