Dark Sky Brewing Company announced on April 10 that it will host a Dark Sky Party to mark the start of International Dark Sky Week and celebrate Flagstaff’s 25th anniversary as the world’s first Dark Sky City.
The event is set for Friday, April 10, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the brewery’s Beer Garden in downtown Flagstaff. The celebration will feature live music by Jonathan Cady from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by a telescope viewing party on the patio presented in partnership with the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition. Expert guides will be available to point out features in the night sky, and attendees can enjoy a new spring menu at Atmosphere Kitchen.
According to Dark Sky Brewing Company, “There’s no better place to celebrate International Dark Sky Week than Dark Sky Brewing Co., a Flagstaff brewery named in honor of its home, designated the world’s first International Dark Sky Place. The brewery, located in downtown Flagstaff, features one of the community’s best patios for stargazing while sampling 20-plus beers on tap — including the latest addition: The Stars Are Calling. To officially launch this new brew into orbit and celebrate the start of International Dark Sky Week, DSB is hosting a Dark Sky Party starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 10.”
The event also highlights efforts made by Flagstaff over the past quarter-century to control light pollution through outdoor lighting policies. These initiatives not only improve visibility of celestial sights such as comets and the Milky Way but also help protect nocturnal ecosystems.
The International Dark Sky Places program certifies communities, parks, and protected areas worldwide that preserve dark sites through responsible lighting policies and public education. There are now more than 270 certified locations across 22 countries.
Since its founding in 2014, Dark Sky Brewing Company has offered an ever-rotating craft beer menu at two downtown Flagstaff locations—a beer garden for guests aged 21 and older featuring food from Atmosphere Kitchen and a family-friendly taproom on Beaver Street serving wood-fired pizza from Pizzicletta—according to the official roster page.
