The City of Flagstaff announced on May 6 that it will begin a roof replacement project at the historic Milligan House, located at 323 W. Aspen Avenue, starting Monday, May 11. The work is expected to last about one week, depending on weather conditions.
The Milligan House was built around 1904 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the Department of Interior. It is considered an important example of Victorian residential architecture in Flagstaff and has historical significance due to its connection with James C. Milligan, a local brickmaker and building contractor who influenced much of Flagstaff’s early development.
Milligan arrived in Flagstaff in 1887 and established his own brickyard by 1888 near a sandstone quarry east of town. The house he built for his family became known for its Queen Anne architectural style and remains one of the city’s most distinctive homes. Over time, the property served as apartments before becoming the offices for the Flagstaff Convention and Visitors Bureau.
To preserve this National Register property, city officials said that maintenance must be consistent. During this project, original wood shake shingles will be replaced with composite material designed to closely match the original look while offering modern durability and protection from weather.
During construction, parking next to the building will be closed temporarily; however, ADA-accessible parking will remain available throughout the project. The electric vehicle charging station on-site will not be operational during this period but alternative chargers are available at Wheeler Park parking lot.
The City of Flagstaff delivers community services through various departments while encouraging public involvement via boards and commissions according to the official website. The city operates under an elected mayor and council members who set policy direction according to the official website.
