The City of Flagstaff announced on Mar. 26 that it has received information regarding the possible presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents seeking space within city limits. The city stated that it does not know the final location or the status of any lease or purchase related to ICE’s plans, and confirmed that no request has been made to use city property.

This update is part of the city’s commitment to keep residents informed about developments involving federal agencies in their community. City officials said they have asked for more details from both federal authorities and representatives about ICE’s intentions in Flagstaff.

“One of the commitments we made to our community is that we would inform you if we received information on the presence of ICE in our community. We recently became aware that ICE is looking at space to station agents within the City of Flagstaff. We are unaware of the final location or the status of a lease or purchase. No request has been made to use City property. If the City does receive a request, the City Manager will act in accordance with the recently established Directive on the Use of City Property. We have pressed for additional information from the federal government and our federal representatives on their plans within the City of Flagstaff. Our community is built on relationships and we expect cooperation and transparency from our federal government,” according to a statement released by city officials.

Flagstaff operates under an elected mayor and council members who set policy, as reported by its official website. The city delivers services through various departments, divisions, boards, commissions, and elections according to its official website.

Flagstaff also holds recognition as an International Dark Sky City since 2001 according to its official website, following earlier measures such as adopting zoning codes in 1989 limiting outdoor lighting per acre as noted by its official website and enacting an ordinance in 1958 addressing outdoor lighting issues according to its official website.

City officials said they will continue seeking further clarification from federal agencies regarding any future actions related to ICE operations within Flagstaff.
