The City of Flagstaff announced on May 14 that Cedar Avenue will be closed to all traffic from West Street to the Fourth/Lockett roundabout from Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31. The closure is scheduled so crews can safely perform final roadway striping along Cedar Avenue and within the Fourth/Lockett roundabout. The road and roundabout are expected to reopen on Monday, June 1.
This work marks the completion of improvements along Cedar Avenue under the Spruce Wash Suite of Projects. Officials said this final striping replaces temporary markings that were installed last fall for winter conditions.
During the closure, detour routes will be available via Dortha Avenue and Linda Vista Drive. Access to businesses and Monte Vista Drive will be maintained as much as possible with flaggers directing local traffic along north/south roadways between Dortha Avenue and Cedar Avenue. Travelers are advised to follow marked signage and exercise caution.
The city outlined what residents can expect during construction: a full road closure between West Street and the Fourth/Lockett roundabout; detours along Dortha Avenue and Linda Vista Drive; temporary access restrictions; vehicle, pedestrian, and bicyclist detour routes; construction equipment in use; travel delays; flaggers on-site for local traffic management; and temporary Mountain Line stop closures with alternative stops provided.
A statement from project officials said, “This is our final piece of work along the Cedar Avenue corridor, and we appreciate your patience during construction. Thank you for supporting this important work to help reduce post-wildfire flooding impacts to the homes and businesses in the area.”
City of Flagstaff delivers community services through its departments while encouraging public involvement via boards, commissions, elections, an elected mayor, council members who set policy guidance, dark sky preservation measures adopted since 1958 including zoning codes limiting outdoor lighting per acre since 1989—and was designated as the world’s first International Dark Sky City in 2001—according to the official website.
