Arizona Public Service may implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff in parts of the Flagstaff area on Wednesday, April 22, as early as 9 a.m., according to an announcement from the City of Flagstaff on April 21. Residents in some eastern areas of Flagstaff could experience power outages during this event, and those affected have been directly notified by APS.

The potential shutoff is intended to enhance public safety during conditions that increase wildfire risk. Residents are advised to prepare for possible outages lasting between 12 and 24 hours. Those who rely on life-sustaining medical equipment requiring electricity are encouraged to register with the APS Medical Care program by calling the provided numbers.

The City advises all residents to build emergency kits with flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, and water; check smoke detector batteries; learn how to manually open electric garage doors or security gates; and check on neighbors who might need assistance. During the outage, residents should use generators outside away from windows, disconnect appliances and electronics to prevent surge damage, keep refrigerators closed as much as possible, and visit the Murdoch Center at 203 E Brannen Ave for information or charging devices.

According to the official website, potable water service will continue uninterrupted for city residents and fire department operations will not be affected. However, there may be temporary impacts on streetlights or recreation facilities. The City annually prepares for PSPS events as part of its community services delivered through various departments while encouraging public involvement through boards and commissions.

The City operates under an elected mayor and council members who establish policy guidance according to its official website. In addition to these governance structures, Flagstaff has a history of managing outdoor lighting: it enacted an ordinance in 1958 addressing outdoor lighting issues according to city records, adopted zoning codes in 1989 limiting outdoor lighting per acre as stated by the city, and was designated as the world’s first International Dark Sky City in 2001 according to its official website.

For more information about temporary impacts related to this event or updates about city services during outages, residents can visit Flagstaff.az.gov/PSPS.
